Networking The Digital Classroom uses a fast network for the transfer of all data, including "live" speech, between student and teacher machines. It is a fully TCP/IP based system with low latency.
In some software-only systems the network is slow because it carries other traffic, resulting in unacceptable delay. Some, so called, "digital" language laboratories get around the problems by additional audio and video wiring. The disadvantage of this hybrid method is extra cost and reduced room flexibility. The Melissi Digital Classroom uses existing high speed networks making high speed connections to the PCs possible as well as providing a high speed backbone. T/100 networks perform well but gigabit networks are even better. Network Security All educational establishments have network security policies and most have physical restrictions ensuring that only their own students can access their networks and the Internet. This is usually achieved by logging in with a registered username and password. The Melissi Digital Classroom does not compromise existing security arrangements. Before students can use the Digital Classroom they must have first been pre-entered by the teacher.This is normally done once only, before their first class. This only gives rights to use the Digital Classroom and any other software on that PC. Students must then log into the Digital Classroom at the start of each class. Back to The Digital Classroom
