Multi-Use Classrooms
|
The days of a classroom being devoted to single subject teaching are
fast disappearing. Increasing student numbers and the requirement
for flexibility are making us all think about combining some specialised
areas.
Traditional language laboratories, and even some of the newer
so-called "digital" labs, still need dedicated wiring,
making multi-use difficult. The Melissi Digital Classroom,
however, is not constrained by analogue wiring so the PCs can be
installed almost anywhere there is a suitable network. It can even
be split over two or more rooms providing that they are connected
to the same network switch.
Melissi does not require you to buy any specialist hardware. You
can buy the PCs, and install subject software, from any of your
usual suppliers.

Comprehensive on-line help is available
to Melissi users at all times.
The Melissi features can be used by teachers to enhance the teaching
and learning experience for students in their subject. At other times
the PCs can be used as if they were in a normal ICT room and the users
will have no access to the Digital Classroom facilities. The furniture
used in some older tape based language labs allows for the installation
of modern computers with sufficient desk space remaining to combine
with a Digital Classroom. This saves money as new furniture need not
be purchased.
Classroom configuration is usually dictated by student numbers and
room shape and size but we are quite willing to offer suggestions
as we have experience of many layouts. Look at our picture
gallery to see some of them.
If purchasing new PCs it is worth considering the use of flat screen
monitors. Apart from causing less eye strain, they give fewer screen
reflections from lights and windows, and give students much more
desk space. PC purchasers are often unaware of the cumulative effect
of noise of a room full of machines too. This can make learning
and teaching very tiring in a relatively short time. Also, for a
little extra cost, the noise level of PC fans can be reduced significantly,
creating a better teaching and learning environment.
